How to Place and/or Exit an ELL Student

Welcome to Placement/Exit rules for ELLs

In order to comply with the Pennsylvania Department of Education policies and procedures for appropriate identification and placement for ELLs, the ESOL teacher must:

Review Home Language Surveys on EH-40s to identify the students to be administered the WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) within 10 days of enrollment.

Review the placement test results and assign the students to an age-appropriate class.

Work with the principal and teachers to complete EH-55 to strategically place all ELLs.

Ensure English proficiency levels are indicated on EH-55 and/or class list.

Change the status of all ELLs from "Unclaimed" to "Served" on the S21 screen within the first 20 school days of each school year.

The students who score 6.0 on the ACCESS Test and/or the students who score 4.6 or higher on the W-APT test exit the ESOL Program.

After a student exits the ESOL Program, he must be monitored for 2 years by the ELL teacher. If the student is not doing well in a regular English class, the ESOL teacher can always bring him back to the ESOL Program.
